These are the most basic of all. Used for almost any type job, from assembly of a bicycle, to repairing a sink. We all must have at least these basic tools.

Never take a short-cut and purchase cheap tools. A good quality tool will last forever. I have tools that were past down from my grandfather.

I recommend these to anyone starting out:

Pliers, with cushion grip. I always care two types in my tool box. The standard 8 inch slip joint and the 7 inch diagonal. A long nose plier would also be a good one to have.

Set of Screwdrivers, set of three, Flat Head, Small Philips, Large Philips. Screws come in all sizes so a good set of screwdrivers of different sizes will be handy.

Hammer: there are many sizes and types, but a good claw hammer, medium in weight will get most jobs done around the house.

Saw: Always good to have a hand saw handy in case there is no power where your working.

Get yourself two types of hand saws. A crosscut saw and a Hacksaw. The crosscut for lumber and a hacksaw for cutting metal.

Tape measure: A tape that is at least 25ft. is the best all round length. Make sure it is easy to read and good strong tab on the end of the tape.

Tool Box: last but not least, the tool box, get the biggest box you can. the bigger the better. You will fill it up over time! And don't be tempted to get a cheap plastic one. the lid will break, it will crack or the handle will come off.

Most are plastic these days, not terrible, just make sure it is durable. Don't settle for cheap and small.

I know that there is many types of specialty tools in this category, in future posts I may cover some of those. But as a beginner these tools are a must for most little jobs around the house.
